mineral make-up, i love thee

i'm a girly girl who loves make-up. i love it all - the eyeshadows, the blush, the mascara. however, those who know me at all know that i struggle with my skin. i think i really do have the worst skin on the planet. i take really good care of my skin, and still it looks like minor volcanoes have erupted all over my face. if you disagree with me, then you've never seen me without make-up.

therefore, make-up has become essential for me. i've always needed a foundation to cover up my many imperfections. unfortunately, all that did the trick was really thick foundation. i'm not a big fan. but lately i've been wanting to go for a lighter look. i want the kind of skin where i can put on a light layer of foundation and be ready to go. therefore, i've wanted to try mineral foundation, but was leery that it wouldn't be enough to cover everything that needs to be covered. then mary kay started selling minderal powder foundation, so i decided to give it a try.

i have found the perfect make-up.

because i'm also using proactiv for my acne, my face is starting to clear up. but i have fallen in love with the mineral foundation. it is sooo light, but looks great. in fact, i put some on before we went out to airport, and have done nothing but sleep since. i just looked at myself in the mirror, and the make-up still looks great. i'm excited because mary kay is now selling the whole package: foundation, eyeshadows, blush, and pressed powder in an ultra-chic compact.

want some? i just happen to know a mary kay consultant...

a little of this, a little of that

  • i love my haircut. i showed my hairdresser (do they even call them that anymore?) a picture of what i wanted, and she said, "so basically the same hairstyle, only shorter?" um yeah, i'm a pretty boring person.
  • i just woke up from a 4-hour nap. joey left this morning for his senior trip; his class is going to washington d.c. and new york. being the good sisters that we are, kelli and i met him at the airport at 6:30 this morning. it didn't hurt that dad treated us to breakfast afterward! joey called me from dallas at 9:30 and said that their connecting flight was leaving at 11. at the time that i write this, their plane is in the air. would you help me pray? i'm also very jealous because he gets to see phantom of the opera on broadway. of course, i went on a cruise for my senior trip, so i guess i can't say too much.
  • our computer is finally fixed! i'm glad to have it back, but now i have to get wireless for the house so kelli and i can be on the internet at the same time. it will be nice, because she always has homework to do online, which seriously interferes with my blogging (hers too, as i'm sure you've noticed!). it'll just be nice to have both my laptop and the computer working again. the cpu is sitting at here at my feet, not even close to being plugged in. i was going to attempt to plug it in, but i had visions of it going back to get fixed yet again because i broke it. dad's coming over later.
  • speaking of dads, read this post. it's so funny, and it reminds me of mine and kelli's relationship with our dad. we love you, daddy!

another reason to look forward to tomorrow

i'm getting my hair cut tomorrow!!!

about two months before i graduated from high school, i suddenly decided that i needed to have short hair. i don't totally regret that decision, because it seems as though my naturally curly hair does better when it's shorter. but i wish i had waited until after i took my senior pictures. so for high graduation, my hair was short and curly. because of that, i wanted to have my hair long and straight for my college graduation.

mission accomplished.

my cousin mentioned last week that this is the longest she's ever seen my hair, and it occurred to meed that it is the longest it's ever been since high school. every time it got past my shoulders, i got it cut. i've enjoyed having long hair, but it's time to get it cut once again.

i'm very, very excited!

what a pest!

my kids are still making me laugh.

in language, we're learning about subjects and verbs (or rather they're learning about subjects and verbs -- i already know about all that exciting stuff!). yesterday, they had about 10 sentences that had either the subject or verb missing and they had to fill it in to make the sentencce complete.. i got a kick out of the last sentence. here's what it said:

a ________ is certainly a pest to have.

here are some of the ones that cracked me up. my favorite is the very last one.

a zit is certainly a pest to have.
a pimpel (that's exactly how it was spelled) is certainly a pest to have.
a apple is certainly a pest to have.
a class is certainly a pest to have.

oi.

monday blues on a tuesday

well, not really. i'm actually pretty happy. but something interesting happened today. i got to work at the usual time, but instead of getting even more work done, i felt like i needed to spend more time in prayer.

i so needed it.

about five minutes before the first bell rang, the head-honcho principal told me that i was getting another student. and yes, my room is very small. i was so tempted to be overwhelmed, but the Lord reminded me of the wonderful time i had spent in His presence just moments before.

it was a crazy busy day, but i felt God with me.

i'm also feeling very sleepy. g'night.

last day

today is my last day off. i'm very sad.

i have been pretty productive so far though. aren't you proud? i just came home from the school, cleaned out the fridge (shouldn't have done that...we have less food than i thought), and marinated the chicken for dinner tonight. now i've got a few more things to do before i'm ready for tomorrow.

maybe i should just take a nap now while i can.

oh yes, that's a good idea...

tomorrow, tomorrow, i'll love ya, tomorrow

tomorrow i am going somewhere very exciting.

in the morning, i am leaving for san antonio (gotta love that city) to see phantom of the opera! yes, i've seen it before, as well as the movie, but i love seeing it on stage. the first time i saw it was in houston, and i was mesmerized from the very beginning. i can't wait for tomorrow.

this has been the best spring break i've ever had. i understand that a lot of it probably has to do with the fact that it's a break from school, but on monday i realized something else too. there are some things that define my family, and probably the two right under God are music and sports.

when i mentioned to someone that my first major in college was music and that mom and dad are both choir directors, she said, "oh! so music's in your blood!" um yeah, i'd never really thought of it that way. maybe that's why i felt like such a failure when i decided to change my major halfway through. i love music, but i would have been miserable as a music teacher. changing my major was one of the best decisions i've ever made, but music is still a part of me. i even stayed in the asu choir while i was an education major because i couldn't give it up. there's something so special about making music with someone else. and i really miss being in a choir. i miss my choir director, dr. lee. i miss her hilarious antics and silly ways to motivate us. i miss it.

then there's basketball. you know how much i love the spurs. and march madness is my favorite time of year (mostly because it's around the time of my birthday...whatever). but being able to spend this week watching live games and games on t.v. has been wonderful. this break has been about two things that i love dearly-two things i don't get to do or experience on a daily basis because i'm so taken up with teaching. don't get me wrong: i love teaching. but music and basketball are big parts of what make me me.

that's why this week has been so great.

oh, and eating at pappasitos tomorrow for lunch won't hurt either =)

grrrrr

i am very annoyed.

i am 24 years old and i still break out. all over my face. AND i wash my face regularly.

i need to go to a dermatologist.

like yesterday.

basketball all day long

i'm in heaven.

roddick and the rope

a long time ago, we got roddick a rope to chew. he's played with it off and on over the past few months, but it seems as though he's been playing with it more lately. yesterday i got a video of him (and kelli) playing with it.

and please excuse the trash bag in the background. getting it out of the trash can was a big enough feat.

memories

tonight after church we went out to eat with some friends. because there were so many of us, we opted to sit at two tables instead of one big table. kelli and i ended up sitting at the kids table. i told her that i felt like were back in jr. high or high school. back then, whenever mom and dad took someone from the church out to eat or had them over, it was our job to sit with the kids and keep them entertained so the adults could visit. when i said that, ryan leaned over and said, "welcome to my life at the kids table." poor little thing, he's only just beginning!

anyway, tonight was hilarious. the kids we were sitting with ended up entertaining us instead of the other way around. jonah, who's five, kept flirting with the server (in his defense, she was pretty). jared, who's in 3rd grade, kept eyeing my salad. when i got it, he said, "um bethany, could i have a crouton...with a piece of cheese....and tomato...and lettuce?" i bit my lip so i wouldn't laugh out loud and slid my plate over to him. he looked at kelli and explained, "it's okay, we're sharing." i love that boy. jonah and jared's big sister kandra was just mortified.

oh the memories...

go spurs go!

it was amazing. the icing on the cake obviously would have been a win, but the game was all it was hyped up to be (did that sentence even make sense?).

we got to san antonio around 3:30, checked into the hotel, rested a bit, then went to get a bite to eat before we set out to the at&t center. we thought that traffic would be worse than it really was, so we ended up getting there a little after 6. the doors didn't open until 6:30. it wasn't a bad wait though. i was blown away by how many people were already in line.

when we finally got in, we went to the spurs shop to get some souvenirs (at my uncle's insistence, i assure you!). while we were there, we got a neat surprise. eva longoria was there too! you should have seen the crowd around her. she had a bodyguard, a guy that looked like he could be tony parker's brother, and some other ladies with her. there were all sorts of people taking their cameras out to take pictures...me included! my dad were standing outside the shop, and when she walked past them, ryan said, "she was literally inches away from me!"

after kelli and i got our souvenirs (baseball caps in brown, pink, and white, decals, and a large pillow), we found our seats. we were pretty high up but the view was still pretty good. then the game started. it wasn't my first spurs game, but going to those games never gets old. the first half was spectacular. at one point the spurs were up by 22 points, but in true spurs fashion (hey, nobody's perfect), they let the celtics come back. sadly, they were not able to pull out a victory. in the final two minutes, i lost track of how many times the lead changed. like i told my friend bekah, it was crazy intense! that's why there are no pictures of the actual game. i didn't want to waste time getting my camera out in case i missed a steal or something. by the fourth quarter i was completely drained from cheering.

after the game we all went to mi tierra, a yummy mexican restaurant. it was gooood!

overall it was a wonderful trip. thank you uncle noe and daddy!

i'm not going to make it

my deepest apologies - i will not be able to blog about the spurs tonight. maybe tomorrow when i'm not so tired.

i'm sure you won't be able to sleep tonight. don't lie.

the actual birthday

my actual birthday was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. i had lunch with my family at roosters (super good chicken). and yes, it was my whole family here in san angelo. it was so much fun! after that, kelli and i went shopping with birthday money that i got. we went to target where i got a new bedspread for my bed. then i went to kirklands and got a lovely flag for the front of our house, a picture collage for the inside of our house, and a lamp for my desk at work. after that we met up with sarah and courtney to go to the air show (waiting until 2 to go to the air show that started at 3 ranks pretty high on stupid decisions that i have made). it was awesome! i stole the pictures below from courtney because her camera is better than mine.

after the air show, we went to get pedicures. we had such a wonderful time! the water was cold, but apparently it couldn't be helped because they had been so busy that they ran out of hot water. whatever. after our pedis, we met up with my parents and ryan and had dinner at rosa's. after dinner, we went to baker street to meet up with olivia. we were so tired and drained from the day that we didn't stay very long. kelli and i came home and watched a movie to end my fabulous birthday.

that night as i got in bed, i had nothing but thanks to God for all of the wonderful blessings that he has given me. a huge family that loves me, friends who care enough to make my birthday special, and a church family who is a tremendous blessing. who could ask for more?

enjoy the slideshow!

birthday celebration #2

thursday night, some of my friends and i went to red lobster. sarah, courtney, pauline, kelli, bekah, erin, heather, and i had a great time eating and laughing and hanging out. the food was good but the company was even better. sarah paid for my wonderful meal (loooove shrimp scampi), bekah gave me a target gift card, courtney gave some cute black earrings, and pauline and heather gave me a yummy-smelling candle and pretty, pretty pink top. you'll see it in pictures later because i wore it on my actual birthday!

after red lobster, we went to hastings to get some coffee and talk some more. since i didn't have school the next day, i stayed out much later than i usually do. in fact, i saw one of my students there! but i had a blast being able to spend time with my friends like i used to be able to. teaching has taken me in such a different direction from my friends that i don't see them as much as i'd like to. i felt much more like the old bethany that night.

me and court. love her!

there was a picture of everyone, but it wasn't taken with my camera. if i get it soon, i'll post it.

friday, i went to lunch with my old boss, jaxine. it was nice being able to catch up on everything at asu that i left behind when i changed jobs. we had a great lunch and great conversation.

thanks to all my friends who made my birthday extra special this year. your constant encouragement and overall wonderful friendships keep me going. i love you all!

birthday celebration #1

for your thorough enjoyment, i have decided to bless you with multiple posts about my multiple birthday celebrations.

ready? and so we begin...

my darling class threw me a surprise "birthday" part thursday afternoon. they are a lot of things, adorable being one of them, but good secret-keepers is not one of them! one of the room moms brought cupcakes and things to decorate them with. we had cupcakes and juice. correction: they had cupcakes and and juice. i had a cupcake and dr. pepper! my gift from the class was two dr. peppers, a bag of easter m&ms, and a package of trident gum wrapped in a super cute pink basket. they also made a big poster with all of their names on it, and some pretty balloons. here's a couple of pictures of things i got from some of my students.

a cute mary kay bag from a girl whose mom sells mary kay. in the bag was mascara and a perfume sampler. love it!

the front of a card from one sweet girl

the inside. how could you not melt?

i also got a candle and candle holder. the party made me feel so wonderful. i love my class and my amazing room mothers.

holy cow

holy cow.

the spurs lost an incredibly exciting game. i have pictures and much to tell later, but having the personality that i was blessed with (or genetically handed down to - thanks, dad), i'm going to go in order of the birthday celebrations that i have had so far. for the record, last night was pretty much the best night that i've ever had. i've never had a birthday as good as this one.

and this brings me to another reason why i'm so glad that my birthday is in march:

march madness.

i am a basketball fanatic, and the fact that march madness is starting tonight has me thrilled.

i can't wait. i can't wait. i can't wait.

in the big sa

that's right, people. i'm here in san antonio.

the next and final installment of my birthday celebration is about to begin. i'm way excited!!!!!!!! because i was thinking of you, o fellow blogger or blog reader, i brought my laptop so that i could recount each wonderful memory as it comes. i'm about to begin getting ready for the big game. and i do mean, THE BIG GAME. and for those of you who i promised to text during the game, i will uphold my word.

unless it's intense, of course. you understand that i need to keep my full attention on the spurs for them to pull out a win.

i'm out!

so sorry

i was planning to update tonight. i have so much to say about my multiple birthday celebrations (yes, i know i'm spoiled), but i'm not finished celebrating! i'm leaving tomorrow for the spurs game. the plan is to take lots of pictures, and i can just add it to the super blogging i'm gonna have to do when i come back. can you wait?

oh, and i got a new book that i'm completely hooked on. that might be another reason...

spurs vs. celtics

the spurs are playing the celtics on monday night. it's supposed to be a good game. scratch that - it's supposed a BIG game. and guess who's going??????

that's right! my uncle noe got tickets for us to go see the game, and i am T-H-R-I-L-L-E-D! i love, love, love going to san antonio, and i love going to see the spurs even more. such good games. now i get to do both for my birthday! isn't that a wonderful birthday gift? i love it. thank you, uncle noe!

i think i'm going to have a good birthday this year!

what REALLY happens at small group

misti was kind enough to share her wedding cake samples with us. maybe she shouldn't have.

i love small groups.

something is very wrong

i finished my lesson plans for the week after spring break.

they're done. finished. and they're not even due for a while.

i, bethany hernandez the ultimate procrastinator, finished something early.

holy cow.

how did this happen?

Monday, March 10, 2008

for the record

"springing forward" is dumb.

i hate it.

q & a with miss hernandez

first things first: it's my birthday week! are you getting excited?!

i decided not to mention anything about my birthday to my kids this week. i've been throwing not-so-subtle hints about it for a week, so i wanted to see if they would remember at all. as i was taking lunch count, i said the date out loud. as soon as i did, they all said, "five more days until your birthday!" such smart kids they are.

then this afternoon one boy came to my desk with a blank piece of paper. he slapped it down on my desk, grabbed a pencil, and said, "all right, i need to ask you some questions." he then proceeded to ask me my all of my favorites. when i asked him why, he said, "oh i don't know. maybe because of a certain special occasion coming up...perhaps your birthday?" and thus began a spontaneous q & a session with miss hernandez.

i don't know. i just don't know.

Monday, March 3, 2008

ah yes...

getting into my pajamas at 9:15 is a most glorious feeling. it would have been sooner, but i actually had stuff to do. i'm currently cooking my lunch for tomorrow. i feel so productive.

today we played another game in history and as i was asking the questions, i hit a wall. a huge wall. i seriously could have put my head down on my desk right then and slept for hours. i couldn't concentrate. i finally just had to switch subjects and have them do something on their own because i was so out of it.

i can't wait for spring break.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY MONTH!

Saturday, March 1, 2008

basketball, baby

thursday night was a big basketball night for the hernandez family. ryan had the championship game for his select basketball game. it was awesome! it was relatively close during the first three quarters, and then in the fourth quarter, ryan's team exploded. i think they ended up winning by 13 points. fun, fun, fun. kelli and i were sitting on the wrong side, however. we were surrounded by the parents from the other team and they were very negative. oh well, our team won!

the wolverines - ryan's on the far left. they're all such junior high boys. like one sister said, "well, they're boys so of course they take horrible pictures!"

it's my birthday month!

that's right, ladies and gentlemen, my birthday month has arrived! it's a time for great celebration!

happy march, everyone!
