marines vs. the world

i'm going to get in trouble for this, but oh well!

for those of you who don't know, our family is a marine family. anyone who has gone into the military has gone into the marines only. i have 4 cousins who have been/are in the marines, and one uncle who was in the marines for 32 years. i've grown up hearing that the marines are the best branch of the military and that no one comes close. so when i first read this joke from www.ajokeaday.com, i literally laughed out loud. i've included it here for your enjoyment.

One reason the Military Services have trouble operating jointly is that they don't speak the same language. For example, if you told Navy personnel to "secure a building," they would turn off the lights and lock the doors. The Army would occupy the building so no one could enter. Marines would assault the building, capture it, and defend it with suppressive fire and close combat. The Air Force, on the other hand, would take out a three-year lease with an option to buy.

the kindness of strangers

like i said earlier, i had to get the oil changed in my car today. (okay, actually it had to be done earlier, but i kept forgetting. oops.) anyway, if you get gas at town & country, then you can save the receipt for a dollar off an oil change. the most receipts you can collect is 10 receipts, for a total of $10 off. pretty nifty, eh? anyway, for some reason i didn't have 10 receipts in my car, which made me kinda sad. i had 6, which still wasn't bad. i mean, that's $6 i don't have to pay, right? however, being the forgetful person that i am, i forgot to get the receipts out of my car when i dropped it off. i was annoyed but not upset.

as i was sitting in the waiting area watching the virginia vs. virginia tech football game (like i care), a man with his teenage son came up to me. the man asked me if i was getting my oil changed, and when i said that i was, he asked, "have you paid out yet?" after i told him i hadn't, he handed me a stack of receipts while he explained, "i have these receipts that you can give them for $10 off the price of the oil change. you can have them." i sat there in shock for a while before i realized that he was still holding the receipts out, so i took them. after i thanked him, he just shrugged and said, "well i have a whole stack of them and nothing to do with them."

i was so touched that he would just hand them out when he could have saved them for a later time. it's inspired me to be a blessing to someone else.

family fun

like i said before, one of my favorite things about any holiday (my birthday included!) is all the family time. we had dinner together last night, went to my uncle b's house afterward, and then moved the party to my wita's house. we even watched a couple of home videos with my cousins acting completely crazy. it was fun remembering thanksgivings gone by.

then today started with a family breakfast. now there are many reasons why i love my family, but this morning my favorite reason was because breakfast meant eating at 10 a.m., not some ungodly hour like 7 a.m. after a yummy breakfast, i realized that i had to get the oil changed in my car. that was fun. then i met my cousins and sister to run a whole slew of errands, with a stop at chick-fil-a for lunch...of course! tonight is movie night for the girls in the family while the boys go to a basketball game.

i love days like these.

on the road again...

after an extremely short visit to my grandparents house, we are now back home. we drove into town, picked up the dogs, and came home. we've only been home for 30 minutes and already kelli and i have unpacked our bags and decorated for christmas (please don't be impressed; our decorations consist of a really small tree that sits on our t.v.).

now we're about to go eat with the family (second time this week-so much fun!) and then who know what after that...maybe buzz word!!

have a great weekend, everybody!

life is good

don't you just love thanksgiving?

i do. we come to la grange every year to see my grandma and papa. it's nice coming here because it's so quiet and peaceful. we left super early this morning (like 6:30...see?) and got here about 11 this morning. after we ate, i took a 2 hour nap. that's right, folks, 2 hours! this was the sleeping that i was looking forward to.

what has made this thanksgiving extra special is that i got to meet some more cousins of mine. i have a friend who always make fun of me because she says that i seem to meeting new family all the time. what can i say...i'm mexican!

anyway, i'm glad for this break from school (hallelujah) to spend with family and count my blessings. i think i just may make it through the next three weeks to christmas break.

happy thanksgiving!

out of town

so i had a crazy busy week before thanksgiving (who hasn't?) and now i'm headed out of town for a conference. when i get back, i will have so much to blog about!

headaches

headaches are...well, a headache. this is day 3 for me having a headache. not the dull ache, but the sharp pain. so much fun. normally i can figure out why, but for some reason this one has me stumped.

hmmm.

i do feel much better now than i did earlier though. i slept for almost 2 hours when i got home, then went to my parents house for dinner. we had beef tips over rice-that will make anyone feel better! after we ate, ryan taught me and kelli how to play wii music. it was hard! i think i'm a little bitter because kelli had a better score than i did. stinker. another thing that made my evening better was talking to my cousin cheli on the phone. she always has funny stories and tonight was so exception. i love my family.

oh, and by the way...4 more days until thanksgiving break!

tattling

i hate tattling. hate it, hate it, hate it. if one of my students starts to tell on someone, i just send them back to their desk. it's ridiculous. that said, i'm going to tattle...on myself.

there are a few of my students, boys in particular, who have a habit of saying "dang it." i've told them multiple time not to say that, so they know that particular phrase is not allowed. as i was finishing up reading groups yesterday, i got a note from the office. the note said that we would have a jean day at school on monday since we brought so much food for the food drive. i got really excited until i realized that due to a previous engagement, i would not be at school on monday. before i could stop myself, i said "dang it!" a little too loudly.

oops.

i looked up and saw one of my sweet little boys standing right by desk. as soon as i looked at him, he gasped (a little too dramatic if you ask me) and immediately started looking around for someone to tell that "miss hernandez said dang it". before he could get to anyone, i exclaimed "no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no! don't tell anyone what i just said-it was a mistake!" he still had this grin on his face that said oh, i have something on you! of course the whole class heard me tell him not to say anything so they naturally started asking questions. one of the girls even pulled him aside to ask him. i saw him shake his head, but i wonder how long his silence is going to last.

that's what i get for opening my big mouth. dang it...i mean...see what i mean?

a full day

whew! it has been a full, great day! i knew that it would be busy, but it was fun too. i had to go to wal-mart to fill a prescription this morning, and when i went to pay for it, they had my old address on file. we moved in 2000, so apparently i haven't been sick enough to need a prescription medicine since at least then. i'm pretty healthy!

anyway, after i left wal-mart (i was there over an hour...gee whiz), i grabbed lunch, came home and took a shower, and then went to the first of two baby showers today. the first one was for a friend of mine from high school. i say high school, but we've really known each other since the 2nd grade. since she and her husband don't live here, i obviously don't get to see her a whole lot. it was really great seeing her. it seems weird that my friends are having babies though. i told kelli that we weren't old enough to have babies and she said, "uh...yeah you are!" the shower was so nice. i loved the way they had it set up, and my favorite part was that after they opened the presents, everyone gathered around them and prayed for them and their baby. how cool is that?

i left that shower and went home to rest for a little while, then i picked up my mom and went to another baby shower, this time for another longtime friend who also attends our church. we had a really great time and even had some yummy hamburgers.

after the shower was over, i headed over to my friends' house for taco soup and games (yes, i ate again). while pauline was cooking the soup, i was telling the girls about the baby showers. at one point i mentioned that i was so glad that we didn't play games at either of the showers (i absolutely abhor playing games at showers) and pauline said, "oh, that's good to know for when we plan your baby shower!" maybe i should concentrate on getting married first. =)

the taco soup was so delicious, and we had cornbread to go with it. so, so good. then we played apples to apples and, of course, buzz word! i'm happy to report that i was on the winning team this time. woo hoo!

truth be told, i'm kind of sad that tomorrow's the last day of our fall campaign. i have learned so much and have been reminded of God's greatness through this entire campaign. but i'm excited to see what else God has in store for solid rock church.

like i knew it would

today was so much better than yesterday!

i drove to school just not feeling like myself. i seriously considered not getting out of bed this morning, and that feeling doesn't happen often. i did some work once i got to school, and then i had a 7:30 meeting. my principal had some things to say that really encouraged me. when i walked back to my room, there was a cute pink bucket full of vanilla and chocolate fudge! talk about a mood picker upper. =)

then the best part of the morning came. i only had to teach for 45 minutes this morning before my two room moms and 3 other moms and grandmothers came to do a project with my class. not only did my little darlings behave, but i got an extra 45 minutes to catch up on my own work while the moms were doing the activity. woo hoo! i really do have amazing room moms. they have bought me so much stuff for my classroom, and then they told me before they lefttoday that they are wanting to change out my bulletin boards so i won't have to. i'm one lucky teacher!

all in all, it was a much better day like i knew it would be. i still can't wait for the thanksgiving break though!

i know!

i know, it's been a long time. but alas, the basketball season is upon us, and that really has most of my attention....well, other than school!

ryan had a game last night, and he has one tonight in midland. in fact he's playing right now. i wanted to go, but i had a meeting at school earlier tonight. it's probably for the best, considering that last week i went to his game in abilene, and since we got home late, i was exhausted. it took me the rest of the week and weekend to recuperate. i'm loving basketball season, though.

school has been hectic. i'm even behind on lesson plans. well, behind for me. i still have time to turn them in. and don't even get me started on my little darlings! let's just say that it's been a rough couple of days. one of the teachers told me earlier this week, "now i'm just warning you-the weeks right before thanksgiving and christmas are not the most fun. the kids are ready for a break and we're ready for a break. until that break comes, just hold on." oh man, she wasn't kidding. but what i love about these first graders is that every day is a new day. when they come into the room tomorrow, all will be forgiven. isn't that great?

speaking of great, my lovely little brother brought me a sonic drink two days in a row! (oh yeah, so did jeremy.) gotta love sonic drinks. it made my days bearable.

so....i think that's it for now. have a great rest of the week!

because i know you're waiting for this

the update you've been waiting for is here! prepare to be disappointed-i live a very boring life.

  • first graders don't get rhetorical questions. they just don't. after seeing my kids bump into each other for about the fifth time before lunch, out of exasperation i asked, "how many times have i told you not to run in the classroom?" one of the boys turned to his friend and said, "hey, how many days have we been in school?" they don't get rhetorical questions, but they sure do get sarcasm.
  • basketball season has officially started. tuesday we traveled to abilene for ryan's first basketball game. it was a good trip, even though his team lost, and we got home about 11:30. i'm still feeling the effects of that night. i think i'm going to sleep all day saturday. except for lunch with pauline. and dinner with my family. and a couple of other things that need to get done. but other than that i will be asleep! i am excited for the season. watching my brother and cousins (micah and hannah) play is one of my greatest joys.
  • two more weeks before thanksgiving break. that's all that really matters right now.

whoa baby!

i should blog more, huh? i would tonight, but i'm just too tired. i'm sure i'll have time tomorrow.

i'm sure of it.

maybe.

happy november!

i feel like this year has flown by. i distinctly remember the beginning of 2008 and now it's close to ending! so strange. time needs to slow down!

last night our family went out to eat to celebrate my cousin micah's birthday. after dinner we went to my uncle's house to play games. it was girls vs. boys, and i am very sad that the girls lost.=( it was still fun, though. i somehow knew that playing buzz word with the family would make it hilarious. sure enough, my family did not disappoint.

i really have nothing new to say. i don't remember anything super exciting about school, and i didn't really have an exciting saturday...pretty much all i did was sleep all day (oooh, tia y, i just remembered that i needed to call you back. sorry!). i'm beginning to think that i should never make any plans for saturdays. i'm loving the relaxation.

hey, wait-don't we turn back our clocks tonight?! hallelujah!!!!!
