my little darlings continued their debate on my age today.
i finally broke down and told them my age. it's really not a big deal, but sheesh, i thought they would have forgotten it already.
on another note, today i got a really sweet card from one of the girls and a ring from another girl. i told them thank you while we were getting ready to leave for the day. poor little squanto couldn't handle the fact that two other people gave me something and he didn't. he ran up to me, handed me something, and said, "here."
me: "what is this?"
squanto: "it's a compass!"
me: "i don't see the needle."
squanto: "you have to open it -- like this."
me: "oh...thanks, squanto! i like it!"
squanto: "eh - it's small and cheap."
me: "SQUANTO!"
squanto: "no i'm kidding. it's just small...and cheap."
me: (sighing) "squanto, sit down."
squanto: "yes ma'am"
he's also student of the week this week. this should be interesting.

happy birthday, joey!
today is my little brother's 18th birthday.holy cow. he's 18! and he's not little. more like much bigger than i am. but how hard is that?!
he's a senior this year, and i am so proud of him. he's worked at chick-fil-a for almost 2 years now and he's about to be in his second play. he even got a great part!
joey, i'm so proud to be your sister. you are a great actor and singer, but more importantly you desire to serve God in whatever you do. keep Jesus #1 in your life and He will continue to bless you! i love you!

another ordinary day
two things stick out in my mind from yesterday.
1) after giving the spelling pre-test, i told the class they could look over their paper before they turned it in. a boy in the back row raised his hand and asked, "with or without our spelling book?" i bit back an automatic and oh-so-sarcastic reply while another boy turned around and exclaimed, "you can't check it with your book! that's called cheating! gaaaaaaaawwww!"
2) in history, we played a review game. i told each team to pick a number between 1-100. after they told me their numbers, i told them the number was 45. squanto, sign-bearing boy looked at me and said, "did you pick 45 because that's how old you are?"
oh no. oh noooooooo.
in an attempt to make me feel better, another boy said, "she doesn't look like she's 45! she looks like she's in her 30s."
um......
while the class was debating my age (i was in too much shock to calm them down), one of the shyest girls looked at the boy next to her and said, "i think miss hernandez looks 16."
did i mention that the boy next to her was "squanto?" he, of course, quieted the class and announced to the class that i was 16.

happy birthday, mom!
happy birthday to my mom!
today is my mom's ----th birthday (did you really think i was gonna put it on here?!) - at least for another couple of hours. she told me that she had a really good day. i bought her starbucks this morning, then we all went to dinner at fuentes. not her first choice, but we had to go somewhere close to the church. she told us everything she got from her fellow teacher friends, and let me tell ya, she did good! kelli and i bought her a vera bradley purse, the size that she's been wanting (i hope). we bought in on sunday and couldn't wait until today to give it to her, so she's had it since then. she's gotten lots of compliments on it too! i'm not sure if joey's given her his gift yet, so i won't tell you what it is, but i will say that it's very "joey." don't worry, mom, you'll like it!
mom, i'm glad you enjoyed your very special day. you deserved it and so much more. thank you for everything you do for me. te quiero mucho. (i know it's wrong-but i tried)

read the signs
my class knows that when i give them an assignment to do, there is NO TALKING! they are a very social class, so it can get very loud in our classroom if i don't control it. so today there were solving word jumbles in spelling, and i had given them an extension assignment for them to do after they solved the word jumbles. i started walking around the room to monitor them when something caught my eye.
this is the same boy who begged me to assign him a 500-word essay on squanto. he never finished it, by the way. maybe i should make him do it after all...
